I’ve been wanting to share these photos with you since they were captured just 2 weeks after our gorgeous Aria came into the world! We’ve got them back, enjoyed gazing on them ourselves, and now we are so excited to share them with you! We are so pleased with them. I’ve shared a few of the photos on social media as a sneak peak, but here’s some fresh ones and a little about our behind the scenes from the day. I’ve also paired up with the incredible photographer that captured these special moments for us, Afton from Afton Fife Photography, to give away an amazing newborn, family or lifestyle shoot to one lucky person. This is valued at over $2000, which makes it the BIGGEST PRIZE I’VE EVER GIVEN AWAY ON THE BLOG! It’s a caps-worthy level of excitement for you, because I’d love for you to enjoy your own family photos as much as we have enjoyed ours!
These are my favourites of all the beautiful photos Afton took. I am so glad we captured these moments in time, what precious memories they will be of a crazy season of life in our little Canberra cottage. This year has gone by really quickly so these lovely photos are a nice way to help me reflect and appreciate the beautiful things I have in my life.
This photo of Aria and I is one of my favourites. I was settling her before we tried to capture her in the little ruffle pants and headband I had bought her. It just captures my gaze of wonder and amazement, she’s such a little blessing and I don’t think I’ll ever get over the fact that I grew her, or her adorable big brother, Finley. It’s funny how some of the most natural photos are the ones you love the most and that’s exactly why I chose Afton for this job because that is what she specialises in – natural, candid family photography. I had seen her work in my neighbours house as she had done their family photos and every time I walked into their house I adored the photos they had of their kids. When I found out the photographer was her sister in law and she was willing to come to Canberra for a shoot (Afton is Sydney based) I was over the moon!
Finley has been the most wonderful big brother, he adores his little sister so much. While we were shooting with Aria he picked a camellia from our garden and brought it in for her. It had fallen apart during his trek back from the garden, but he wanted her to have every part of that flower – throwing the petals onto the bed in front of her. It made for some gorgeous shots too. Did you see the one I shared one Instagram? It looks like she’s smiling here!
As I’m thinking about what to write in this post, I just can’t think of anything else except how much they make my heart want to burst with joy! It was such a lovely two weeks off that Reis had at home with us, we had so much fun as a family of 4…or 6 if you include the dogs, haha! Although Afton was more than happy to capture some photos with the dogs, we decided to keep it simple and just shoot with the kids this time. Anyone with kids knows how hard this can be on it’s own, let alone managing two big dogs too, haha.
Afton was absolutely fantastic with Finn and Aria and it felt almost like she was part of the extended family while she was in our home, she was so relaxed and really knew how to engage with Finn. She’s so relaxed, fun and really met Finn at his level with lots of interest, playfulness, warmth and kindness. I think as a result she was able to really capture his cheeky and positive personality in these incredible photos of him. I really couldn’t recommend her enough. In fact, I am sure we will be using her again!
The other thing I loved about Afton, is the guidance and support she provided before the shoot. Although I take a lot of photos for the blog, we’ve never had a professional family shoot before, so I was a bit nervous! These nerves were eased with a phone call from Afton in the lead up, along with the well thought out welcome pack she sent me in the mail. This outlined things to consider before the shoot and what to expect on the day. It was written in a very relaxed, non-burdensome way that helped reduced any potential stress.
There were plenty of breaks for feeding Aria and for Finn to have a play. It was very go with the flow – whoever was ready and able to have photos taken would have their pictures taken as we just talked and played. We mostly shot in our bedroom as we had planned beforehand, so there was no need to clean every inch of the house before Afton arrived. As a Mum of two girls herself, she is well aware of the realities of motherhood and the need to keep it simple! This was another thing which helped keep it fun and relaxed during our shoot.
