Are you a local ‘Canberran’ looking for somewhere to buy real, organic, fresh food right from the farmer? Well you are in luck! Canberra has a few great weekend farmers markets for our grocery shopping that are sure to provide fresh, seasonal fruit and veg, as well as scrumptious coffee and gourmet foods along the way! If you’re from the big smoke, good ol’ Sydney, check out my list of Sydney’s best farmers markets. If you’re a Brisbanite, this is my favourite Brisbane Farmers Market.
Saturday Fresh Produce Farmers Markets in Canberra
Capital Region Farmers Market, EPIC
The Capital Region Farmers Markets are on every Saturday but only from 7.30am-11.30am at EPIC. This is great motivation to get up early on a Saturday, as you will get access to some of the freshest produce in the region!
You will find at least 100 stalls displaying everything from fruit, vegetables, all meats including seafood, as well as honey, baked goods, flowers and some beautiful gourmet products. Make sure you take a good look around, there is a lot to see! My tip would be to get in early, grab a hot coffee and do a loop around the hall to see everything, chat with the farmers, then go back to pick up your favourites. I love mandarins, so am enjoying the current season – I’d recommend trying a few samples while you are there! Everything you buy is so fresh, you will find it easily lasts the whole week.
Sound good to you? You can checkout their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or YouTube channels to check it out before you go. Maybe download the app ahead of time so you can browse the stalls, find out more about the Rotary Club of Hall who run the markets and connect on Instagram.
Sunday Fresh Produce Farmers Markets in Canberra
Southside Farmers Market
If EPIC in northern Canberra feels too far, there is another option for you! The Southside Famers Market is located in Phillip at Canberra College (or sometimes at CIT on Hindmarsh) on a Sunday from 8am-11.30am. Similar to the Regional Farmers Market, you will find a wide variety of fresh produce!
When I visit the Southside Markets, I love to grab a fresh juice on site, and always stop by the baked goods section to find some good gluten free baked treats. It is smaller, but this can mean it is easier to navigate and also easier to ask farmers about their produce.
Old Bus Depot Markets
For something a little different, you can head to the Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston every Sunday from 10am – 4pm. These markets are known for their great combo of fresh produce and lifestyle goods.
Lifestyle Stalls
They have stalls with handmade homewares, clothing, jewellery, art and collectables. This is a great spot to head if you are looking for a unique gift, some art for your walls or something for a child. I have bought my family real sheep skin ‘ugg’ boots and cot rugs, as well as art for the home all in the one spot! It is my one stop shop when I am on the hunt for something a little different.
Fresh Produce (more than veg and fruit!)
While the handmade markets are great to explore, be sure to check out the fresh produce section. You will find some fresh fruit and vegetables here, but you will also be able to pick up freshly baked breads, cupcakes, locally made sauces, spreads and marinates, a variety of cheeses, cannoli and large chocolate dipped strawberries. This is a great spot to hit for those extra pantry fillers. And there is a food market up the back with freshly made hot food, offering a variety of cuisines. You’ll be sure to walk away with some tasty goods!
Have you visited any of these? Where else would you recommend for your fresh produce in Canberra?
