We’re currently in Cronulla, NSW on holidays and so far, it has been the break we needed! We’ve both been flat out with work and were exhausted. Originally we were planning to drive to Brisbane from Canberra but following our 11 hour drive to Melbourne for the bloggers brunch we decided being in the car that long isn’t very relaxing (surprise, surprise!). So we chose a quiet beach holiday (3 hours from home) that also allowed us to be close to family and friends in Sydney. You can follow our holiday adventures in more detail on instagram (don’t forget our instagram stories which only stay live for 24 hours!).
Today was Finn’s first day at the beach and I’m so excited to share with you the photos along with some information I sought from the Cancer Council Australia on how to keep your family sun safe. I’ve even got a Cancer Council Australia pack to giveaway worth $141.65 to help you protect your family this summer.
5 ways to protect yourself from skin cancer
When I spoke to Cancer Council CEO, Professor Sanchia Aranda, I was amazed to find out that skin cancer accounts for the largest number of cancers diagnosed in Australia each year and it is estimated that 13,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2016, along with as many as a million non-melanoma skin cancers. THESE NUMBERS ARE CRAZY. I don’t want my family to be counted in those statistics so we’re trying to follow the 5 simple things Cancer Council suggests we do to protect ourselves from skin cancer. These five things are: sunscreen, clothing, hat, shade and sunglasses.
The high UV levels in Australia plus our outdoor active lifestyle demand the highest possible levels of sun protection. The Cancer Council has provided Australians with high quality and trusted sun protection products for decades. Growing up I used these products and I continue to look to the Cancer Council for information and products to help protect my family from skin cancer. The thing I love most about Cancer Council products is the every sale from products support Cancer Council’s work in cancer research, prevention, education, and patient support services.
Sunscreen
We’ve made pre-beach coffee synonymous with the act of applying sunscreen in our family. Before Finn’s first beach trip we enjoyed a coffee with a view at the new Cronulla Cafe ‘Next Door’.
You can win a big range of this awesome 50+ SPF sunscreen by entering the competition below.
Clothing
Probably one of my favourite ways to stay sun protected is with my Ugly Xmas Rashie by Cancer Council. If I’m going to model safe sun wear to Finn, I may as well have fun with it! Hello Australian Christmas’ at the beach.
Mother and son matching rashies? An unintended (but pleasant) surprise!
Finn and his Daddy! Finn not so sure about that cold water… Finn still not keen on the water with Aunty Kate! A bit cold for those little tootsies (have a look at his toes curled up!).
Hat
I don’t look great in a hat but bought this one from Trade Secret, Cancer council have a great range for adults and kids so I might have to get one of these!
Sisters! It’s been fun to catch up with family whilst back in Sydney.
Shade
Loving this shade tent it was the best because Finn could sleep, be changed and feed in here. Privacy and sun protection – perfect! You can buy a shade like this here.
Sunglasses
These sunglasses are amazing! Polarised and only $59.95 (or you could enter the giveaway and win a pair along with a stack of sunscreen!) they take the glare away and you can see straight through the water, it’s amazing! Pretty stylish too!

We always purchase Cancer Council stuff - especially for the kids, because it just works. Simple as that. They fit, the cover you properly, they protect you properly... and they are great value! I wanted to get prescription sunglasses and my optometrist even said - just buy Cancer Council frames and we'll make prescription lenses for them. Even in his opinion their frames are the best value (and good looking!)
I always choose Cancer Council products where and when I can, they're an established and trusted brand and I'd trust no one else with my family's skin health. Especially since we have a family history of skin cancer!
Looks like a great day at the beach! I love that the sale of Cancer Council products helps put money back into cancer research - keeping us safe in the sun while helping a good cause.
I was one of the 13,000 diagnosed with Melanoma this year and thankfully caught it early. I am over the top cautious with myself and my family. The more times you are burnt in the sun as a child the more risk you have of becoming a statistic. Before i used to be pro active with sunscreen now i realise that clothing and avoidance of the sun in the middle of the day is just as important. Cancer Council products are tried, tested and trusted and fully recommended by my specialists. Enjoy the Summer but stay safe!
products made to perfectly protect your family from the Australian sun and if any one knows best its the cancer council, who wants our skin to be its best
Royalties received from the sale of Cancer Council sun protection products support our vital research, patient support services and community education programs.
Designed to meet Australia’s demanding sun protection standards, and reflects the Aussie sense of style with casual and fun creations.
Our skin is the largest living organ, and that's why it's vital to protect it. Having had three skin cancer lesions removed in the past three years, the Cancer Council is the only brand I would trust.
My "adopted sister" (read great friend who welcomes me in her family, on holidays etc) is at increased risk of skin cancer post organ transplant. Would love to help her get out in the sunshine safely!!
Oh Rowena, this is lovely and sounds like your adopted sister has had a real rough time with her health. Praying for a recover and protection from any skin cancer! Happy new year xx
Cancer Council products are trusted in our family to protect our skin and eyes from sun damage. They are designed especially for Australian conditions and for Aussie skin, and they use hard-wearing, quality materials to produce their wide range of hats, shirts, rashies and sunscreen. I love that you can be sure of protection when you buy Cancer Council products and use them correctly.
Having watched both my mum and grandma suffer with skin cancer having adequate protection is pretty important to me. Plus I appreciate the use of funds from cancer council products going back into cancer research and support.
Like many Aussies, skin cancer runs in the family on both sides. Sun protection is very important to me and my husband and we are passionate about passing on the knowledge and sun safety skills to our son. Cancer Council information and products are top quality, available everywhere, and purchase them provides much needed funds for public health campaigns, and research into prevention and treatment. Cancer Council also provide an excellent website with evidence-based info for families, not just on skin cancer but a range of health topics and I genuinely use the website frequently, as a parent and health professional. Great products, great organisation, what's not to love!
Cancer Council products, the name we all trust,
To keep our family safe, skin protection is a must.
Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat,
Wrap yourself in sunglasses, and sit in shade on a mat.
I only choose reputable brands when it comes to sun protection, and the Cancer Council is the most reputable of them all. Their campaigns through my childhood (hello slip, slop, slap!) ensure that the burning summertime issues are always at front of mind, more now than ever that I've got young children.
With so many products out there, I need to make sure that my family have the best there is, and that's Cancer Council. Having lost a close friend to melanoma, I always make sure my kids Slip, Slop, Slap :)
Wow that would make you remember! Sorry to hear that you lost a friend :(
And don't forget the two new ones slide (on sunglasses) and shade (sit in the shade). Happy new year xx
