Weekends are made for sleep ins, friends and recovering from the week that has passed. Long brunches in cute cafes are also a must! My week was shockingly busy, so it’s been a brunch-must weekend. Rees and I were invited to try the breakfast menu at Suburban Cafe in West End and provide some feedback on their cafe.
The food is outstanding. I ate the fritters and Reis the bircher muesli. As you may recall, fritters are my favourite breakfast meal (see my recipe for gluten-free healthy fritters with chile guacamole). Suburban Cafe’s fritters are certainly competing with my favourites at Delicatezza, although I think I prefer Delicatezza’s sides. The portion size is larger than that at Delicatezza, so definitely brunch appropriate and a nice surprise when the prices are quite reasonable.
This place is a hidden gem that’s been around for a while, although it wouldn’t be classed as a popular spot in West End I think this is partially because it isn’t the trendiest looking cafe. It’s a bit bistro-like in it’s appearance. For me, eating out is largely about the ‘atmospheric experience’. This cafe doesn’t quite have that yet. However Ash, the owner (pictured below) is in the process of changing that! His plans include new umbrellas, wooden rustic tables, repainting the inside to greys and charcoal, a new all day breakfast menu that caters for those who are more health conscious, new table numbers with fresh herbs (also pictured below) and some new blackboards. In the mean time don’t be fooled by the exterior – the food quality is excellent!
Ash dreams big but I am sure combined with his wonderful food, these dreams will make Suburban Cafe the up and coming ‘cool kid’ in West End’s cafes.
Sadly, my hand is still in a cast after surgery (if you didn’t know I had surgery, you need to subscribe to my weekly newsletters so you can get all the extra goss and more!). This cast comes off on Thursday and I get a new cast for another 2 months. This next one is able to be taken off for showers and the doctor said I can start to exercise again (PRAISE GOD, I AM GOING CRAZY!). Don’t be fooled by me opening my cutlery here – Reis still has to cut my food…I was just excited to demolish those fritters! 😉
