Working out with your baby
I’ll be honest, exercising with your baby doesn’t always go to plan and isn’t always as logistically easy as some Mama’s on instagram can make it look (as I found out pretty quickly). However, some day there’s no opportunity to do a work out baby free. The best thing you can do on these days is look for other ways to get your body moving. My favourite way to move when I am with Finn all day is to take our Britax Flexx pram outside for some sunshine and fresh air! SO good for the soul!
We love to walk and run, but I also like to stop at the park and do a little toning workout with the pram. It leaves me feeling energised and in the grizzley afternoons, it provides a distraction for both of us. So I thought I would share my pram circuit workout for other mama’s who like to exercise with their prams in the sunshine. If you’re not sure how to do the exercises, check out the video below!
The Active Mum’s Pram Workout
Warm up:
10 minute jog or power walk with pram (highly recommend the Britax Flexx pram – more info about it below)
Workout:
Between each of the following exercise sets do a 100m run with the pram.
- 20 squats – push the pram forward as you squat down and pull back as you stand up. Use the pram to help keep your body upright.
- 10 push ups in front of bub
- 30 second squat hold in front of bub
- 1 min butt kick runs
- 20 walking lunges
Cool down:
10 minute power walk or light jog to cool down
Set your own pace
Above I’ve suggested repetitions for each exercise and I recommend running through all of them a few times over. However as all Mum’s know, bub might not be up for a long session, or might want to be moving more – so amend it to suit your needs on the day. This is really just to give you ideas of ways you can tone your body with a bub & a pram!
The pram
You don’t need a running specific pram for this. I just use my general one which is a Britax Flexx, It’s great because it’s super sturdy, the wheels aren’t too small for a little outdoor power walking/jogging, very smooth, there’s good suspension, and for later in life it comes with a second seat (see the second seat in action here). There’s also plenty of room for groceries underneath, which is handy for the days we walk to the shops.
The Flexx is also perfect for me because it’s compact, and not too bulky to exercise with. Plus, the adjustable height handle makes it easy to adapt to a comfortable height for jogging, squatting or whatever other exercise you’re doing!
So Mama’s, stay positive, love your body and take every opportunity you can to get out and get moving! It’s good for the whole family.
