Today we welcome the beautiful Rachael Finch, Mum, television presenter, model and director of the online dance fitness program, Body of Dance. Rachael and I seem to share the same perspective and struggles in regards to wellbeing and life, so it was really enjoyable to interview her! I hope that you also enjoy this interview as we learn more about what motivates Rachael, how she finds a balanced work & family life, deals with challenges in life and maintains her own wellbeing.
How did you get into TV presenting and what inspired your love for healthy living?
When I started working as a model I was always interested in the prospect of working in television and took a part-time presenting course in between modelling jobs and travel. I was lucky enough to get signed by Channel 7 in 2010 and have been covering sport and lifestyle based programs for the network since. I grew up playing and competing in sport. Mum says she can remember me running down the athletics track with nappies on! My dream was to compete at the Olympics in track and field events but I took a turn in my career when I was 16 after entering a modelling competition. I love knowing what makes me feel amazing, and the science behind the body and mind fascinates me.
What is a typical day like for you?
No two days are ever the same and I love it this way. My weeks are always changing with new commitments, shoots, project planning, training sessions, travel, meetings and of course taking care of the fam. I am blessed to work alongside my husband and a lot of the time we are creating and rehearsing new content for my online program B.O.D (Body of Dance) in our lounge room!
In your eyes, what has made you successful?
I have always loved learning new things and setting myself goals. I’ve been on a mission to discover more about my mind and body every day and I love sharing that with others. I don’t think anything worth having in life comes without hard work and persistence.
How do you stay motivated?
When I feel good through the things I do in my life, I stay motivated. I notice drops in motivation when I sleep poorly, eat crap, think negatively and don’t continue to keep my ‘scales of life’ balanced.
What challenges have you faced throughout your career?
Like everyone there are challenges we face daily through work, and particularly balancing it all with family and home life. We have become great at prioritising, time management and scheduling. Having a full diary excites me and I enjoy the balancing act.
How do you balance your career and social/family life?
We cut out time for each and I’m really big on listening to my body to act on them accordingly. If we’ve spent a whole week shooting and full with work, we may choose to tune out over the weekend and see a movie or go for dinner. We love having friends over for lunch and dinner and our families help out with Violet and Dominic a lot so we are lucky we get to see them.
What is the best thing about being a Mum?
Seeing Violet or Dominic smile and laugh, or watching them experience something for the first time.
What is the hardest thing about being a Mum?
Not being there all the time.
What does ‘wellbeing’ mean to you and how do you maintain it?
Being completely happy in the present moment – not searching for anything more or thinking about the before. I try to keep all the wheels in motion in my life – family, career, love, movement, meditation, heathy eating…
